transferring the Holy Eucharist to St. Joseph’s Oratory
From that moment on…students are able to relax in the peace of the presence of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament at any time, away from the distractions of the world, right in the middle of the campus.
How did this historic transformation come about?
This treasured Oratory (history here) is the epicenter of a major new initiative at SBU, The Lateran Center for Catholic Identity. The new center will provide programs aimed at reinforcing the university’s Catholic identity and includes encouraging the unique call of the Spirit in students. Its very first task was to transform the beautiful six-sided St. Joseph’s Oratory into a Eucharistic adoration chapel complete with glass tabernacle, new lighting and security technology.
Fr Ross Chamberland O.F.M., the Lateran Center’s dynamic, young, executive director, explained the rationale behind creating the new adoration chapel:
“Everything associated with the new LCCI, from the establishment of a residence for men discerning priesthood, to retreat development, to various forms of student outreach is rooted in prayer and adoration of the Lord Jesus,” he said, adding, “the Lord is the center of everything we do and who we are, so we start there. If you are familiar with the power of Eucharistic adoration, you know the transformation that awaits not only the individual students who enter through the heavy oak doors but the entire campus community as well.”
Great things do, indeed, come in small packages.
